Badges are a great way of engaging your users and encourages them to be more active within the community. You can create badges and chose the users to which you'd like to award them. Badges are an aspect of 'Gamification' in Crowdicity, which you can learn more about in our guide to Understanding gamification in Crowdicity. This article explains how to create badges for your Crowdicity community.

In this article:

  • Creating a badge using a pre-loaded image

  • Creating a badge using a custom image

  • Editing and deleting badges

Creating a badge using a pre-loaded image

Each badge that you create will have an image to represent it, a name, a description and a score. The score is the number of points that a user will receive if you give them this badge. You can choose to use one of the pre-loaded images to represent your new badge, or you can upload your own. If you'd like to upload your own image, please see the 'Setting up badges with a custom image', below.

1. Go to Gamification in the Crowd Management menu, click on the Badges tab then click New badge.

2. Click on one the pre-loaded badge images. You will notice that the thumbnail you click on will be transferred to the main square badge image.

3. When you have chosen the image that you want, enter a name, description and score for the badge and click Save badge.

Good to know

If you don't want users to receive additional points when you give them a badge, set the badge score to '0' this means that users wont receive any points when a badge is awarded to them.

Creating a badge with a custom image

1. Go to Gamification in the Crowd Management menu, click on the Badges tab, click New badge.

2. Click Upload an image to open the file upload window, here you can either choose an image that you have already uploaded or you can click on Choose File to upload a new image.

Badge images must be square and 100 x 100 pixels or larger.

3. When you have selected the image that you'd like, click Save choice. The image will become one of the thumbnails you can choose for your badge, click on the thumbnail to select the image.

4. When you have chosen the image that you want, enter a name, description and score for the badge and click Save badge.

Creating a badge that is assigned by a rule

You can automate badge awards by using rules to decide which users qualify for a badge. When creating a badge, choose "Assigned by rule" to see the options.

"Award badge for" lets you choose what action you want to award the badge for. The following options will then change depending on what you choose.

  • "Posting ideas, comments or votes" refers to items the user posts. The next question will then let you choose which of these items you want to use, and how many the user must post to create the badge. For example, if you go on to choose:
    Item type: Vote
    Amount required: 5
Then the user will receive this badge if they case 5 votes.

  • "Receiving comments, votes or status labels" should be used when you want to reward the user for engagement from the community or moderators. If you then choose:
    Source type: Status Label
    Status label: Implemented
    Amount required: 2
Then the user will receive this badge if two of their ideas are awarded the "Implemented" status label.

  • "Reaching a phase or milestone" should be used if you want to reward the user for getting to a certain point in a funnel challenge or a milestone challenge. You'll be able to choose the phase or milestone, and the number of ideas that need to reach it, in the settings that follow.

"Limit to challenge" is available for any rule types that aren't already linked to a specific challenge (for example, through a milestone or phase requirement) and allows you to limit the eligability of the badge award to actions taken in the chosen challenge - for example, ideas posted or votes received.

Badges cannot be converted between rules-based and manually assigned, but you can freely edit the rule on a badge at any time. When you make changes to the rule the badge will be re-assessed, and users may see the badge removed or added to their profiles depending on the changes.

Editing and deleting badges

You can edit the image of a badge and its name, description and point score at any time:

1. Go to Gamification in the Crowd Management menu and click Badges.

2. Click the pencil icon of the badge you wish to edit.

3. Make any changes that you wish to the badge and click Save badge.

To delete a badge, follow step one above and click on the bin icon instead of the pencil.
